The subject of the Palestinian political system is considered one of the most intricate and contentious issues in Palestinian political life, as well as in the perspective of other states. The Palestinian case is exceptionally complex, as numerous impediments -foremost among them the Israeli occupation- have persistently hindered the establishment of a clear and definitive Palestinian political system culminating in a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state.

This study examines the evolution of the Palestinian political system from a legal and constitutional perspective, tracing its formative trajectory across three pivotal historical junctures: the All-Palestine Government, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and the Palestinian Authority. This historical tracing falls within an endeavor to comprehend the roots of the structural deficiencies afflicting the current Palestinian political system, most notably the problematic issue of the ambiguous "constitutional characterization" of the nature of the system of governance. Through two main axes, the study seeks to provide a systematic analysis linking the historical legacy grounded in the "revolutionary legitimacy" embodied by the PLO, and the requirements of "constitutional legitimacy" that the provisions of the Basic Law have attempted to entrench.
